    Following a decline the previous month, employment was little changed in April and the unemployment rate remained at 7.2%.

    Compared with 12 months earlier, employment increased 0.9% or 163,000, all in full time. The total number of hours worked rose by 1.5% over the same period.

    Employment in Alberta increased by 15,000 in April, offsetting the loss in the previous month and pushing the unemployment rate down 0.4 percentage points to 4.4%. Compared with 12 months earlier, employment in Alberta grew by 1.9%. Read more...


  • Alberta has second highest private sector job vacancy rate

    Alberta has the second highest private sector job vacancy rate in the country, according to a report released Thursday by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.  “The vacancy rate in Alberta is still rising, but just not as fast as it has in the last couple of years,” said Richard Truscott, Alberta Director for the CFIB.  The private sector job vacancy rate in Alberta increased slightly in the first quarter of 2013, up 0.1 points to 3.7 per cent, representing 59,600 unfilled jobs.  According to the recent RBC provincial outlook, Alberta employment is forecast to grow by 2.6 per cent this year, second only to Saskatchewan’s 2.7 per cent. In 2014, employment growth of 1.9 per cent in Alberta is expected to lead the country. MORE ...

    The federal government's changes to the Temporary Foreign Workers Program could be bad news for small businesses in Alberta, says a Calgary immigration lawyer.Ottawa announced on Monday that employers will no longer be allowed pay foreign employees up to 15 per cent less than the average wage.  The Conservative government is also freezing a program that sped up the ability of companies to bring in workers.  Evelyn Ackah, whose firm helps businesses navigate immigration law, said bigger firms will be at an advantage under the new rules.
